Manufacturing

In a nutshell

  • In the evolving landscape of Industry 4.0, manufacturing industries face challenges in remote equipment assembly and maintenance. Traditional methods are time-consuming, costly, and require a significant number of skilled workers to be on-site.
  • This use case will investigate available AI-based and Augmented Reality (AR) solutions for remote manufacturing support and maintenance activities. By implementing these advanced technologies, the applicability of HYPER-AI’s swarm computing and automated Cloud-Edge resource coordination will be considered for potential benefits in optimising manufacturing.
  • The developed applications will be integrated into the HYPER-AI platform to provide comprehensive support for the entire lifecycle of remote assembly operations, enhancing decision-making and operational efficiency.

Challenge

The traditional approach to remote assembly and maintenance in manufacturing requires extensive on-site presence of engineers, technicians, and skilled workers. This not only increases operational costs but also extends the duration of the assembly process. Furthermore, the need for sophisticated processing and computational capabilities at the client's premises adds another layer of complexity. Addressing these challenges is critical for improving efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring the safety of shop floor workers. The integration of AI and AR technologies offers a promising solution, enabling real-time support and decision-making, minimising downtime, and enhancing overall process efficiency.

HYPER-AI Solution

The HYPER-AI platform, in collaboration with SABO SA, proposes an innovative solution to revolutionise remote assembly and maintenance processes. By integrating advanced user interface equipment and robotic devices, HYPER-AI will facilitate the implementation of the Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model. This model allows robotic devices to be owned by manufacturers but operated remotely on the client's shop floor, providing detailed operational feedback and enabling timely maintenance and repairs. The use of AR-based remote assembly applications supports operations from design and installation to industrial automation systems. This approach leverages swarm computing and automated coordination of cloud-edge resources, optimising the manufacturing process. Advanced User Interfaces, such as smart glasses and mixed reality platforms, deliver detailed technical instructions, assist in decision-making and recommending the best solutions for the tasks being performed, and ensure worker safety by providing real-time guidance and warnings.

Impact

This use case aims to significantly improve the efficiency and safety of remote assembly operations in the manufacturing industry. By optimising the utilisation of cloud-edge resources, and increasing processing and computational abilities, HYPER-AI will support the entire lifecycle of remote assembly activities, reducing the number of skilled workers required on-site and minimising operational costs. Advanced UI may also substantially improve shop floor worker safety. Devices with extensive computing support may promptly perform complex calculations to safely guide the worker in operations. Such calculations may involve fusion of measurements from different sensors, point cloud construction, object recognition and rendering, generation of sound alarms and warnings.
